The artwork of David E. Mast
David Mast began artistry at a young age. He took top honors in most of his
grade school competitions. Photography became a hobby at age 10 when he
discovered his father's old darkroom equipment in the attic. Two years later,
he took an apprenticeship doing lab work for a professional photographer. At
13, he was certified to use SCUBA and began shooting underwater images a year
later. Photography gradually became a career path, but his love of the ocean's
magic and splendor still fuel his true passion of painting.
He has logged thousands of hours in the world's oceans for the past twenty-four
years. He has experienced many marine habitats, but the California coast, he
feels, is still most unique in all the world and the primary focus of his work.
From the beginning he always said, "I'd rather shoot with a camera - than a
speargun!".
His underwater photos grace many collections. Those photos, along with his
underwater videos, are reference and sometimes inspiration for his paintings.
He has been hanging in many small galleries in Northern California since 1979,
and he has recently been the interest of the prestigious Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Four years ago, David started working with a new media, "Serigraphy". He is
working on techniques to try to bring a soft painting look to an inherently
hard-lined process. He cas completed two editions and is near completion of
the third. The Lions has been sold out.
Fluid Motion seems to be receiving
notable attention and
Canyon de Carmelite is available
pre-publication.
Fluid Motion
"Amongst the kelp forests of the North American coast, one can often catch a
glimpse of a Pacific Sea Lion. I say "glimpse" because these phenomenal marine
mammals are one of the fastest, most agile creatures in the sea. They dart in
and out of view, making turns in the water that rival any bird's in air."
- The Kelp Forest scene is a 24 x 38 inch image of 55 different color layers,
using a 100% Archival Process, available in either of:
- Artist's Editions (140 available)
- Artist's Proofs (9 available)
All of the screens used to create this artwork are destroyed.

Canyon de Carmelite
"The effects of Plate Tectonics, which give us our earthquakes, shift
and shape the land in California. It creates our majestic mountains and their
equally splendid mirror image, the great Monterey Sub-Marine Canyon. This ocean
trench has many fingers, little gorges that reach off of the main canyon.
Across Highway One from the Carmelite Monastery there is one that's only a short
swim from shore. There in 60 feet, behind a rock that pokes through the surface
of a massive kelp bed, the North American Continent crumbles away beneath you.
Giant schools of Cod loom overhead, Seals and Otter frolic, the Kelp sways to
the beat of the sea... it's a place you can feel the pulse of the planet."
The seascape is a 24 x 36 inch image of 78 different color layers, using a 100%
Archival Process. The Edition is not finished, but will be less than 150
Artist's Editions and less than 150 Artist's Proofs when it is. All of the
screens used to create this artwork will be destroyed.
